The City of Bend has one of, if not the best, deed restricted (subsidized) Affordable Housing programs in Oregon. I have had the privilege to be a part of this program for the last 5 years. Some highlights:
- Units built – 1,136
- Units in the pipeline – 300+
- Private & public investment – $127,056,064
- Leverage ratio of local funds – 1:10
Despite these great accomplishments, the lack of housing that is affordable in Bend still persists. We will continue to work hard to provide these types of units, but we can’t subsidize our way out of this issue. We need to continue to develop and implement policies that create affordable housing by design.
The City of Bend needs 5,000 more units of housing for family’s making at or below $87,500. I have worked the last four years to reduce barriers that have prevented housing to be built. There is still a lot of work to be done!
